Vacancy biological researcher Aquaculture
Glasaal Volendam is looking for an all-rounder to join our team of researchers. We are developing a technique with which we can boost the entire eel sector in one fell swoop, AND preserve an endangered species. Do you have 'blue fingers' and would you like to contribute to this revolution? Then read on.
Type of employment: full-time
Location: Edam, Netherlands
Our goal is to supply seedlings to eel farms so that they can raise a truly sustainable eel. It is our mission to make the catching and smuggling of glass eel superfluous, by raising glass eel from the egg onwards. We have to develop the technology needed for this ourselves: even for universities it is not yet possible to raise glass eels. Because our knowledge extends beyond scientific publications, we are convinced that we will succeed in being one of the first in the world to raise glass eel.
Your responsibility will be to maintain larval production. You will do this mainly by taking care of the parent animals, eggs and larvae. In addition, you will contribute to research.
Primary Duties:
- You take care of our parent animals and larvae, especially parent animals
- Because we work in a small team, you will also take on facility-related tasks
- You will conduct biological research on the eel reproductive cycle
In addition:
- Contribute to care of our eel in the larval and willow leaf stage
- Prepare documentation to controlling agencies (think NVWA)
- Collect your data
- Assist with maintenance on the growing systems
- Rotate on the schedule of weekend and emergency shifts
Job Requirements:
- You have at least a BSc in a relevant field: e.g. (marine) biology or aquaculture
- You are a go-getter with a "can do" mentality
- As a biologist, you have an eye for detail and quality where appropriate
- You have strong organizational skills
- You are able to work independently and as part of a team
- You have good command of the Dutch and English languages (written and oral)
- You are in possession of driving license B
- Due to emergency services, live in the vicinity of the facility (max 30 minutes drive)
We offer you
- Good primary and secondary benefits
- A job in an environment working on a scientific breakthrough
- A job in an environment working to conserve a species
- A position where you will gain experience doing "in-company" research
- A position where you will gain experience working in a hatchery or hatchery
