Eel Dance
Sunday, June 23, the film "Palingdans" will premiere, 10:00 a.m. at Cinema Oostereiland, Hoorn, also at 2 p.m. at Cinema Enkhuizen. Glasaal Volendam BV will be featured extensively and chairman Nico van Straalen will comment prior to the film.

New staff
As of May 1, Annalena Karyda has left us. After serving two and a half years at Glasaal Volendam, she is continuing her career elsewhere in the Netherlands. We are deeply indebted to Annalena for her great dedication to our mission. She has contributed significantly to a crucial phase in our business and the great progress we made in 2023. We wish her every success in her new job.
Fortunately, we were able to attract new talent fairly quickly: Mariana Duarte dos Santos Vieira. She joined us as of June 1. She graduated from the University of Leiria, Portugal, with an MSc degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries. She previously worked as an aquarium manager at SeaLife Munich, in Germany and has experience in aquaculture systems and fish health. We are very happy to have Mariana join our team. With Mariana we will hopefully witness the breakthrough to the first glass eel in the near future.

Dinis passed test animal science course
Dinis Cardoso attended the laboratory animal science course in April and May plus the specialist course on fish. This qualifies him as an "Article 9 officer." Dinis thus contributes to the legal obligations under our animal testing license and also to the high standards we maintain when it comes to the animal welfare of our eels.

New milestones
The experiments we do are mainly focused on maximizing larval survival and growth in the period 14 to 42 days after egg hatch. That is where the greatest gains can be made for high production volume. But we are also looking at the survival of leptocephalus larvae that we are trying to continue breeding as long as possible. In doing so, we set another record in the last quarter: one larva survived more than 200 days. Unfortunately, this "Garrix 2" has now died.
